Fountain Design & Outdoor Fountains
How to choose your outdoor fountain? What are the different fountain systems and designs ?
Here is our expert advice !
Which outdoor fountain to choose ?
Before choosing a fountain, you should first ask yourself the question of the purpose you wish to give it. There are in fact two categories of fountains :
Decorative fountains, which generally use non-potable water and operate with a pump system,
functional fountains, which are connected to the drinking water network and have a tank and a main tap.
Once the type of fountain is chosen, it can take many forms:
A traditional fountain of nice size always finds its place in a large garden. It gives old houses a unique cachet. This type of fountain is best suited to an environment full of vegetation. It is more expensive and often difficult to maintain, but remains a must for large old houses in the French style.
A fountain made of modern materials can be adapted to a multitude of gardens, including high gardens (terraces, balconies, etc.) of urban residences. The choice of materials is vast: aluminum, rot-proof wood, zinc and even resin, which imitates many materials without having their drawbacks.
A glazed terracotta fountain, for a Zen environment, presents soothing rounded shapes. This type of fountain offers many decorative options, such as adding a plant environment (cactus, bamboo...) or minerals, as in a Japanese garden.
Natural stone fountains are suitable for many types of gardens and integrate well into a planted environment. The fountains are made to measure: we choose the rocks for their shapes in order to create installations that are as reminiscent of wilderness as possible. A fountain made of rough stone attracts birds and diffuses a soothing sound in your outdoor space.
Smaller fountains, basins or sculptural objects enhance small outdoor spaces. They are very trendy because they create intimate terraces. Thanks to their often very low weight, they can even be moved.
How to create a fountain?
Making your own fountain is simpler than it seems, although the work is substantial and requires some technique. Building a garden fountain with a closed loop system (water used by a pump) is done in several steps. To begin, dig a hole to place the basin and the electrical connection for the fountain pump. Don't forget to install the water outlet pipe. Once you've done that, put your decorative support in place. For a better look, you can decorate the fountain with decorative pieces such as stones and plants.
Can you build a waterfall pond yourself ?
A pond waterfall can be homemade. But it is advisable to call a professional for its realization. A landscaper can advise you on the support to be made, the electrical system and the plant environment.
