What is a garden without grass? What types of gardens are possible? Which plants to choose?

Here is our expert advice!

What alternatives to a lawn for a garden?

Over the past few years, lawns and turf have been getting a bad rap. Why do they suddenly get a bad rap? They consume a lot of water, require a lot of maintenance, fade easily, are invaded by weeds, etc. Grass is an enemy of biodiversity, because a single variety of lawn replaces the multiplicity of local plants.

Alternatives exist and are gaining in popularity to cover the ground other than with grass. Let's take a look at the different alternatives to grass for your garden.

Japanese grass, flowering grass

Japanese grass is one of the most popular lawn varieties. This mixture is composed of flowers from 10 cm to 30 cm high. Lily of the valley, daisies, purple cornflowers... so many different flowers for an ideal alternative to lawns. Japanese grass brings to your garden a spring harmony and warm colors.

The sowing of this grass takes place between March and June, as for the flowering, it extends from June to September. The maintenance of Japanese grass is simpler than that of a classic lawn, even if it is necessary to water it from time to time, or to mow it at the end of the season.

Perennial ground cover plants

Ground cover plants are similar to ground mats: these creeping shrubs cover the ground. Perennials live several years in a row and survive the cold winter. Their maintenance is simple and quick, and they can plant on different types of soil.

Clover

For a garden without grass, you can also opt for clover. Some clover species can actually be crawling and replace a lawn. Long considered a weed, clover requires very little maintenance and gives your lawn a wild and harmonious look.

Which plants to choose for a garden without lawn?

To avoid lawns in a garden, there are many alternatives. For example, perennial ground covers are an excellent option. This way, you will get a vegetated soil without the need to regularly maintain a lawn.

You can also use shrubs or fruit trees to add texture and color to your garden. Mixed flowers can also contribute to this colorful effect. It is best to choose hardy plants and vegetation if you want to keep maintenance to a minimum.
